... למדה שנתיים בבית הספר התיכון הפולני בעיירה הסמוכה בורשצ׳וב וגם שם יצא שמה לשבח כתלמידה מצטיינת וכמארגנת מסיבות חברתיות בהן היתה מופיעה בדיקלום, בשירה ובנגינה. לאחר שהסוביי- טים כבשו את פולין המזרחית בספטמבר 1939 התחילה דבורה את לימודיה בכיתה העליונה של בית הספר התיכון לקראת בחינות הבגרות. מנהל בית הספר, זיונץ, שהיה פולני לאומי, אף כי ליבראלי וידיד היהודים, נאסר על ידי השלטונות הסובייטיים ועמד להישלח לארץ הגזירה כגורלם של רבים, וביניהם גם יהודים.
