כבוד להיות רב בקהלה המחוזית אמציסלב, ברוסיה ־
הלבנד, (פלד מודדלוב) כממלא־מקרמושל הגאון ר׳ הלל

"החברה הציונית... באמת אין לה במה להתבייש
מרעותיה, בשתי הערים הגדולות (הכוונה בזה
לביאליסטוק וגרודנה הנ״ל: מ.צ.) הקרובות. ובד-
ברים אחרים גם עולה עליהן. גם בעיר הקטנה הזאת
מצא הקולוניאל־באנק חן ומאתים וחמישים איש שקלו
את נדבתם לציון. העיר זכתה גם לרב ציוני שנסע על
חשבונו לבאזעל, לקונגרס הציוני השני, במכתבו שהוא
כותב לנכבדי עירו אודות הקאנגרעס, הוא מדבר בהת-
פעלות עזה והמ ה משפיעים השפעה גדולה על קוראיהם
(הכוונה להרב ר׳ צבי-הירש דירקטור)... בעיר סו-
קולקה נמצא מצב אנשי חיל ופקידים רבים ולכן
נמצא בעיר זו גם בית מסחר ליינות חוץ-לארץ ומטעם
הציונים נמצא "בית מסחר זה גם "יין כרמל". כפי
ששמעתי רבים שותים יין זה מהפקידים מאשר על
שותיו היהודים. וכאשר ישבנו כולנו בבית אחד ומשוחחים
ומדברים על דבר ציון ומושבותיה עד שניחר גרונם,
עלתה מחשבה טובה על לב אחד מן המסובים וישלח
להביא שני בקבוקים יין-כרמל. החנוני הביט בתימהון
על הקונה ועיניו שאלו: ״לשמחה מה זו עושה? הלא
אין משתה חתנים עשירים בעיר? לו בקשו ממני רק
בקבוק אחד כי אז לא היה תמה על החפץ, רק היה
שואל תיכף "מי הוא החולה", כי כבר הורגל שרופאי
סוקולקה מצווים לחולים לשתות "יין-כרמל" אבל
