How did people resist, survive, and remember?
This path traces clandestine political activity, escapes, hiding, armed resistance, and the postwar work of rebuilding memory. It shows survival as a mixture of courage, mutual aid, chance, and painful return—not a simple ending to the story.
What forms did resistance and survival take, and how was Łuków remembered afterward?
Resistance inside and beyond the ghetto
The book recalls a clandestine gathering commemorating the Great October Revolution and describes Reuben Heyblum’s underground work sending medicines to partisan detachments. Nahum Goldzak is remembered as a Łuków-born activist who aided underground resistance and later became a partisan survivor.

Hiding and escape
Survivor accounts describe the narrator’s family escaping into the forest, families hiding in workshops or rural homes, and groups fleeing Łuków at night. Other testimonies record that some hidden families were later murdered, emphasizing both the possibility and the extreme danger of hiding.

Liberation and return did not end the danger
The records place Łuków’s liberation before a survivors’ gathering and describe survivors returning to the town while Jews still faced persecution. A March 1946 document and accounts of repatriation convey a postwar world in which survival required movement, reunion, and difficult decisions about home.

Memory as communal reconstruction
The Łuków landsmanschaft in Brussels, memorial evenings for ghetto victims, survivor publications, and the Yizkor book itself became forms of communal remembrance. These efforts preserved names, testimonies, cultural life, and the claim that Jewish Łuków should be known as a living community as well as a destroyed one.
