בקיץ 1855 פרצה מגפת חולירע, שפגעה קשה באוכלוסיה היהודית בלבוב. בין האנשים הידועים שמתו במגפה היו: הסופר העברי יעקב בודק, הרופא ד״ר א. גוסמן, המורים שלמה זינגר וליאון סקלר ומזכיר־הקהלה ברנהרד פיפס. בין קרבנות החולירע היתה גם מגדלינה כהן אלמנתו של הרב אברהם כהן־2). על הקהלה הוטל לדאוג לאלמנות ויתומים במספר רב שנשארו בלי שום משען לקיומם. רק בשנת 1857 הוציאה הקהלה 6000 פלורין למטרה זו. ...
