... ברבנות. הרב ר׳ מאיר בן ר׳ שמשון מרכוס, שנולד
בשנת ת״ר בסוקולקה. בימי בחרותו בא לביאליסטוק ולמד
בישיבה בשקידה רבה. ואחרי גמר למודיו בבית־המדרש
לרבנים בוילנה שב לסוקולקה ונתמנה בה לרב מטעם
הממשלה. אחר־כך נבחר לרב עדתי בנובוגרודק, אחר
פטירת ר׳ שלמה זלמן בנדט, הרב של ביאליסטוק, במקו-
מו. גם כיהן כמורה לדת בבית־הספר הריאלי בשפה
הרוסית, בבית־הכנסת היה נושא את דרשותיו הרשמיות
ברוסית במעמד פקידי השלטונות, היה חבר פעיל בכל
מוסדות הקהילה, מראשוני "חובבי-ציון" ומפיצי רעיו-
נותיה, מראשי מוסדות צדקה וחסד, עמד על משמרתו
בביאליסטוק 34 שנים, נפטר בהיותו בן 61 שנה, ביום

רים נכבדים וישרים. בימי בחרותו בא לביאליסטוק, למד
באחת מישיבותיה ועשה חיל בלימודיו עד להפליא. הוריו
שלחוהו אחר־כך לווילנא לבית המדרש לרבנים. לאחר
שגמר שם לימודיו שב לעיירת מולדתו סוקולקה ונתמנה
בה רב־מטעם הממשלה. גם בנובוהורודק פעל ויסד בית־
