...אני מהלך בלוית משמר גרמני לחפש מזון בבתים העזובים
של הגיטו. הגיטו עושה רושם מחריד של אימה בל־תימחה. דומית־
מוות שוררת כאן. אף אדם, אף נפש חיה, חיילים גרמנים בודדים
משוטטים בין החורבות לבזוז בהן, והאחד משתדל להעלים את
הדבר מרעהו. הדלתות והחלונות פרוצים. הנה מחצית חלון תלויה,
והמחצית השניה מוטלת על הארץ. ובנשוב הרוח תשמע מעין אנקת־
יללה דרך פרצות הבתים, ודומה עליך, הבתים מקוננים על מות
תושביהם שנכרתו באכזריות מארץ החיים... קינת נשים המבכות
את ילדיהן שנרצחו בלא עת, שדמם ומוחם ניתזו ונשפכו כמים

שערות ובחומצת מימן מוחקים את שמות המשפחה היהודיים
ורושמים שמות פולניים במקומם, נוסף לכך מכינים הם תעודות־
עבודה מתאימות ובשעת הדחק אפשר היה לעבור, מצויירים בניירות
אלה, אל מעבר לגבול. אנשים רבים נפלו לידי הגסטאפו, אבל קצתם
החזיקו מעמד וניצלו. ברם, קבוצה זו גם לא שכחה לקחת חלק
במחתרת. הם הצליחו להשיג כמה אקדחים, שינו מעיליהם שיהיו
דומים לחולצות ה״היטלר־יוגנט" למען יוכלו ללבשם מחוץ לחומת
