כאשר נוכחנו לדעת כי גם כאן לא גוכל להשאר׳ רתמתי את
סוסי לעגלה. הלילה חלף וקרני שמש ראשונות החלו מפזזות.
באותו בוקר המשכתי לנסוע לחמילניק. לאחר שבוע של
טלטולים גוספים הגענו לחמילניק. בבואי לעײרה בקשתי
ראשית לדעת מהו גורל אבי ואחי שנשארו שם. סיפרו לי
היהודים כי הם שרוײם בפחד מפגי ידם הנוקמת של הגרמנים.
שרפו את בית־המדרש. שכני אבי הפצירו בי להמלט על נפשי
מכאן מיד, משום שצפוי לי עונש חימור בגלל החשדות בריגול
שמטילים הגרמנים בכל תושב חדש המגיע לעײרד- גטלתי שוב
את עגלת־נדודי והמשכתי בדרך לקרקוב. הדרך כולה היתה
עטופה שממה ודממה, כל העײרות היהודױת הױ שרופות.
