עם עזיבת הרב אלימלך ניפלד את פולין ועליתו לא״י נתמנה יפת במקומו כעורך שבועון התנועה "די יידישע שטימע" ב*1932 ובעל־כרחו נכנס לשטח הפוליטיקה. מלבד מאמרים ראשיים שכתב בכל גליון בבעיות שעמדו על סדר היום וחברותו בהנהגה הראשית של המזרחי ושל "תורה ועבודה" נכנס כחבר גם בהנהלה הראשית של "יבנה", מייסד הספריה העממית שעל־יד "יבנה" ופעיל מאוד בעריכת שורת ספרים וחוברות בהוצאה זו וחומר מתאים לתנועה. ...

בימי הועד של נציגי יהודי פולין בארץ בימי המלחמה הגיע משם עוד חומר וידיעות בצורת דו״חים וביולטינים שבהם נזכרו מפעם לפעם שמות חברי המזרחי הפעילים, ובהם לא נפקד שמו של יפת. מספרות המחתרת נודע שיפת ניהל עם רוזנבוים (מנהל מחלקת החרדים של הקק״ל בפולין) את המטבח העממי העירוני. הוא היה המטפל העיקרי בפעולת חידוש בתי הספר לילדים במחתרת וארשה, והוא אירגן את בתי־הספר של "יבנה", ודוקא בזמן הקשה ביותר בגיטו, חטיפת העסקנים ל״משלוח" בידי שוטרי הנאצים, והוא סיכן את חייו יום יום יום בפעולתו החיונית. אחרי שנתקבל רשיון משלטון הנאצים למועצת היהודים בגיטולפתוח בתי-הספר לילדים, קרא נשיא הקהלה צ׳רניאקוב להתיעצות נציגי כל ארגוני בתי־הספר כיצד לבצע את הרשיון. יפת טיפל מטעם "יבנה" בכל הענינים המעשיים. הוא נמנה עם העסקנים המדיניים שהשתדלו להדגיש את האופי הצבורי של העזרה היהודית העצמית, בניגוד למועצה היהודית, והיה מסור לכל דבר שטיפל בו.

ב־1942 נוסד הועד הדתי ליד הקהלה שבה השתתפו ב״כ המפלגות, בהם גם יפת. הועד פקח על מנוחת יום שבת ועוד. ב־19 ליולי 1942 השתתף יפת באספה של עסקנים ואישים לטכס עצה בנדון הגירוש הקרוב של יהודי הגיטו, בה השתתפו אדמו״רים ורבנים ונציגי העתונות. במסיבה באותה שנה למלאות שבעים שנה ליוסף יא שונסקי, פרנס חרוץ ונאמן ביותר, נשיא מחלקת ההשכלה המקצועית השתתף גם יפת, ואף נאם לכבוד חתן המסיבה. ...
