אצל מלמדי גמרא ובבתי המדרש. בחמילניק נוםדה גם׳ במח־
צית השניה של המאה הי״ט, ישיבה גדולה עם שתי כתות ובהן
המעולים. מםפר רב של בחורים היה זורם לחמילניק מרחבי
למדו 10 שעות לױם. היתה ידועה מראשי הישיבה ומוריה
פולין להמשיך בישיבה בלמודים• בחײ הקהילה בשנים
1840 —1870 עשה רבות לשיפור המצב הארגוני ושל המוםדות
היהודײם, ראש הקהל ישראל גוטמן, ובמחצית השניה של
המאה הי״ט — ר׳ ױחנן םילמן, סבו של הרב סילמן, שהיה
ידוע בכנוױת ״ר׳ ױהנן חמיעלניקער״ כמנהיג קהילתו ועםקן
ציבורי. הוא ײצג את חמילגיק באםיפת העםקנים בורשה
שהתקײמה אחרי הפרעות ברוםיה (1880) ונבחר כשליח יהודי
רוםיה לצאת לפרים וללונדון לשם השתדלות ראשי היהדות
