To understand the origins of the Bialystoker Jewish community in France, we must recall that in the 1930’s, between the two World Wars, our dedicated /andsman, Dr. Awrom Bonczewski, attempted to found a society of Bialystoker Jews in Paris. Unfortunately, his efforts failed. During the Nazi Holocaust, Dr. Bonczewski and his son Victor were deported to Auschwitz. Despite the emphasis by the media on the search for family and friends, all who attended knew how painfully remote the possibility of such re- unions was. The sight of the meeting hall with its home- made posters and messages naming Polish streets and towns now empty of Jews, was a heartbreaking and embittering one for me. There would be no one from my mother’s tiny, destroyed shtet/ to remark on family resemblances. My aunts and uncles who died as chil- dren would not appear. Each day, the other Jewish prisoners and I were sent out to perform slave labor under the strict supervision of Ukrainian and Lithuanian guards with large attack dogs. It would have been impossible to escape even without such vigilance. Stuthof was on an island sur- rounded by water. Often, as I carried out the back- breaking assignments, some of the British and French prisoners of war in the camp would give me extra bread that they had received from the Red Cross. In turn, I threw the bread over the fence into the women’s camp populated by Jewish survivors of the Wilno ghetto. The 800 stones signify, as indi- cated on a sign when one enters the camp, 800,000 Jews killed there. I found a big rock upon which the name Bialystok was etched. ... Then the German nightmare passed. We, the hand- ful of survivors, returned to our hometown, finding everything in ruins — the city, the Jewish community, the citizenry. The cemeteries were not spared. Weeds and wild grass, as well as garbage and manure, covered the Zabia cemetery. Goats had grazed on this holy ground, destroying most of the gravestones. In addition to our concern for the survivors, we felt obliged to care for the dead. After all, only two or three thousand were interred in the ghetto cemetery. Most of our brethren died in the crematoria of Treblinka, Majdanek, Ausch- witz and the like. We trimmed the weeds from the graves, built a brick wall around the cemetery and hired a reliable watchman to protect the grounds. Gradually the cemetery was restored to proper condition. ‘A terrible thing has happened. The ashes of our heroes and resistance fighters, murdered after the Nazis brutally suppressed the Bialystok ghetto uprising, were placed in a mass grave. This military grave was dese- crated, violating Polish tradition of paying special honor to fallen soldiers. In no other ghetto or concen- tration camp — Warsaw, Treblinka, Sobibor, Ausch- witz — were there remains of fallen heroes. Only Bialystok preserved a mass grave of its dead until 1971. The Germans had, after all, not burned the bodies of our victims. Rather, they threw them into a pit, a gar- bage dump as it were, and on top of their corpses shot another fifty-five, captured after the ghetto was liqui- dated in 1943. With the greatest respect, the Polish and Jewish communities of Bialystok honored their memo- ries on April 11, 1946, exhuming their remains and re- burying them in a mass grave. ...

All this made it more difficult for the Jewish resistance fighters to defend themselves, for they were afforded no protection from Nazi firepower. Nevertheless, the battles lasted several days. On the fourth day, German armored tanks and field artillery entered the ghetto, reinforced by about a thousand SS soldiers and Ukrainians. The Jews attempted to repulse them mainly with grenades and Molotov cocktails. They also had a few machine guns. Several hundred Germans and Ukrainians were killed.
